Outta This World Questions

This week we have researched on questions that my teacher have gave me. These are the answers.

How was space created?

What planet was discovered first in the solar system?

Uranus was discovered first by Sir William Herschel in 1781. Herschel became famous in the 18th century because he had found the first planet.

Scientists believe that the Solar System was created from a giant cloud of dust and gas. They believe that this dust and gas began to collapse under the
weight of its own gravity. As it did so, the matter contained within this could begin moving in a giant circle, much like the water in a drain moves around the center of the drain in a circle

‘My dream Outta This World Holiday.’

This term we have been learning ‘Outta This World’ about the solar system. I have written a dream about when I was in Mercury.

‘My dream Outta This World Holiday.’

‘Brring........’ screamed the alarm. I tried to ignore it, I wanted to stay in my dream. My dream ‘Outta This World’ holiday.

When I was on Mercury I didn’t know what I was doing there. All I could feel was me floating and the hot air. As I was on the planet Mercury I felt like I was burning, but I wondered if Mercury was the hottest. As I was floating in the air I had noticed it was a rocky planet and very small.

I had been very far from home and seen nobody there expect me, myself and I. I saw a friend called Millenny, she was lost like me. So I went to her and she asked me, “what kind of planet are we on?”. I said “we are on the planet Mercury.” I suddenly thought why I was there. I remembered it is the smallest and the closest to the sun. I told Millenny to come with me and we would go look around at what kind of planet it was. We were walking around when we saw a big alien. Me and Millenny ran back and tried to find a way back home. We tried standing on rocks looking for a button to take us back. Suddenly I threw the rock at the alien and it all went black.

I woke back up and there I was lying in bed. That was the worst nightmare ever but thank goodness we were back home safe and sound.

Thank you to Ms Gleson and Helen for checking my work.

Keep Your Eye On The Ball

We are using the nations of the 2011 Rugby World Cup as our inquiry path. For this unit we are in one of four teams: Brumbies, Force, Rebels, Stormers.
My team is Force
There will be a number of tasks for us to navigate to achieve our goal of an excellent result in this unit. There are a mixture of individual and team tasks to be completed.
The main task that will show our learning in this unit will be a Hyperstudio presentation about one of the countries in the World Cup competition.

Where The Heck Is Mission Bay

Different Auckland town centres have adopted Rugby teams from countries that qualified for the World Cup.
I found out information about; the location in Auckland, something special about this place, a 'potted' history of the place, if it has it's own symbol of some sort.
(If we couldn't find a symbol we chose a picture that told more about the place).

  1. Hossanah
  2. Force
  3. Your prediction of what nation will win the 2011 World Cup. All blacks

Task One – “Where The Heck Is Mission Bay.

Mission Bay is a suburb of Auckland city, in the North Island of New Zealand. It is located seven kilometres to the east of the city centre.

2. Mission Bay takes its name from the Melanesian Mission, which was based in the bay.

3. Mission Bay has a number of attraction of historic of interest. The Melanesian Mission House was built from volcanic stone bought from Rangitoto. It was opened in 1859 to coincide with the arrival of 38 Melanesians on board the Mission vessel, Southern Cross. By 1915 only the stone dining hall block remained, the rest of the buildings having been removed or used in the repair or erection of farm houses and outbuildings on the Melanesian Estate.

Furniture design

This term in room19 we have been looking at furniture design and have been designing our own for the street, we have been making prototypes too. First we did identifying needs in our street.

Then we went on to doing research on internet, when we finished looking at other peoples designs we had to design our own. It took us a really long time to look at the furniture.

We then drew our ideas on paper and done a P.M.I for it, then we had to label it. The reason why we had to label our furniture was because is so we know how we were going to measure it.

The next thing we had to do was to write down what we needed to design it. After we did on those things we started with our design.

At first I didn’t know how to design my furniture but with a little help from a friend I was able to do it. We first did it with cardboard and then we moved on to paper masha. It took a day for it to dry up until we could paint. When the glue was dried up it was time to paint, and after you have finished painting and it is all dried you have finished and just need to decorate it.

I think I did really great doing my furniture design for the street because I put a lot of work in it.

Popsicle Commercial

Frank Epperson invented the Popsicles, ice-blocks in 1905, thanks to Epperson’s invention we can now have a tasty treat to cool us down.

Frank Epperson was born in 1894 and raised in San Fransisco, he died in 1983.When he was 11 years of age he accidentally made the ice blocks when he left his soda on the porch overnight. When he was about 29 years of age he applied for a patent for his frozen ice on stick. He sold his first ice blocks to the company Joe Lowe in New York.
Frank finally introduced his creation at the Alameda Amusement park in 1923.

Frank Epperson's invention now has lots of different flavours and are different shapes and colours. Ice blocks also cool us down on hot sunny days and is enjoyed by children all around the world. You could even make them yourself. My favorite flavour is strawberry.

Looking back-looking Forward
Reflection

Last term I thought the most interesting thing was going to camp and doing fun activities.
I learnt a lot of new things mostly things I haven’t heard before. I also liked going to Technology at Tamaki Collage and learning things about science and now I am in food Tech.

I really like using my Net book and getting to use it everyday.

I also played softball and we came second in our game .

The thing I disliked was being mixed up with the year 8’s in my class. Another thing was the work that I got, because it was Intermediate work and I didn’t really know how to do it.

This term I hope that it would be better then last term, and I would like to learn more work at school. I am looking forward learning more about our topic BIGGER,BETTER, STRONGER, FASTER!!.

My Thoughts About Camp

Did you know that next week is year 7 & 8s camp and it is called “TAKE CHARGE”, I am really looking forward to it. My friends and I are really excited and what would happen in camp. I have already packed my things and still can not stop thinking about it. The reason why I am really excited is because I think this camp would be better than any other camp.

Yesterday we had a meeting in the street because the teachers had told us what group we were in and I was in the 'Motivatorz'. I like my group because I can still hang around with my friends. The leaders for 'Motivatorz' are Paulitia and Sione and the teacher for that group is Mrs Nua. After we had settle in to our group Mrs Nua had sent the groups to go learn a chant and then would do it.

On the first day of camp my group had to put up the tents and another groups tent. First we had to put the other groups base then we would do our own. Second we had to lay our own tent base and then put the pegs in and the other things. After we had done our tents we had to go and do the food for the hangi prep.

I really had a great time at camp and I wanted it to be longer. I think that if you would go to camp, you would not want to leave. When it was time for me to leave I didn’t want to go because of Rock ups activities were so cool that you would like to do it again. I think that camp was the best out of all and on the 21st.

Building Your Own Tent

Materials: 1 Hammer
Tent(3 people)
‘Fly’(1)
pegs (12)
poles (3)
Ropes (x8)

Method: 1. Find a clear level, grassed area away from over hanging branches of trees

2. Open the bag and place out the base

3. Get the pegs and hold down the corners by putting the pegs in
the holes on the side

4. Get out the 3 poles from a green little bag in the big bag that the base came from and connect them together so that there would be two black long poles and one grey pole

5. Get one black pole and stick one side of the pole on the ground and the other one opposite it on a diagonal

6. Get the other black pole and do the same on step 5 but on the other side.
7. Get the end of the black pole and put the clippers in the black pole and do the same with the rest

8. Get the poles and look for black little clips on the tent and clip them on to the pole. when you have finished you would have to get the fly and put it over the poles and get the pegs and peg the ropes to the grass so it doesn’t fly away

9. Check if the pegs are tight in the grass

10. Enjoy your tent.
